Virtual Fencing Cost: What to Expect and How to Compare
"How much does virtual fencing cost?" is the first question most ranchers ask, and the hardest to answer from public information. Most vendors do not post prices on their websites. Here's how costs are typically structured and how to get a real number.
What you'll pay for
- Collars: one per animal. Ask the price, warranty and replacement cost.
- Subscription: many systems charge an ongoing per-collar or per-head software fee.
- Base stations or towers: some systems need towers on your land to talk to collars; others rely on cellular networks.
- Installation and training: setup, initial animal training and support.
- Physical perimeter: you'll likely still maintain boundary fences.
Vendors to request quotes from
Halter, Nofence, Vence (Merck Animal Health) and Gallagher. At the time we checked, none of their homepages listed a simple per-head price, so contact them for a quote.
How to compare against wire
- Get a three-year total cost per head from each vendor, including towers and expected collar replacements.
- Get a price per mile for the cross-fencing you'd otherwise build (materials plus labor), using a supplier like Red Brand or an energizer from Gallagher or Patriot for electric options.
- Factor in labor saved moving cattle and any grazing improvements you expect.
- Ask your local USDA NRCS office about cost-share for grazing infrastructure.
Virtual fencing usually pencils out best for rough or leased country and intensive rotational grazing, and least for small, already-fenced places. More detail: virtual fencing guide.
